LIMING

Liming is a term used to describe the process of adding agricultural limestone to a pond or lake. If a pondowner intends on maximizing the pond's fish production through fertilization, then in most cases, ag lime must be applied. For most of the ponds and lakes in the southeastern United States, the soils have been determined to be acidic; and furthermore, the nutrient levels within the contained water are lower. There are a few “lucky” instances (most of them in Florida) where the water supply comes from underground, and the water and substrate is already rich in calcium carbonate (CaCO3) due to it traveling through limestone on its way to the surface.

When needed, Coastal Plain Land and Lakes distributes the limestone evenly over the pond’s bottom; usually at a rate of 4 tons/surface acre. This number can vary depending on the needs of the pond. But, either way, the more you apply, the longer it lasts.
