AQUATIC WEED CONTROL

In most cases, aquatic weeds are the foremost nuisance in any lake, pond, or waterway. Living in the South amplifies the problem because of warmer temperatures and longer growing seasons; Florida especially. Although, aquatic vegetation plays a beneficial role in fish habitat, such as nurseries for fish recruitment classes, a pond can still suffer greatly from having too many weeds. When a water body has too many weeds, it can negatively affect fishing, swimming, navigation, and the overall beauty of the pond or canal; not to mention, the weeds intake of vital nutrients suspended throughout the water column. These nutrients are the basis of pond production - particularly phytoplankton, which serves as one of the two food sources for larval fish (baby fish), and for oxygen production within the pond.

As weed problem severity differs, so can the approach to eliminating the problem. In most cases, we like to implement a treatment plan of herbicide application(s) in combination with a biological noxious weed control, the stocking of grass carp. In Florida and Georgia, we are required by the Fish and Wildlife Commissions of each state to stock triploid grass carp. The term “Triploid” is a fancy way of saying “sterile.” Also, depending on the ponds outflow design, a spillway barrier may also be required. Coastal Plain Land and Lakes can assist in acquiring permits for grass carp, and the design and installation of spillway barriers.

Let our trained personnel come out and identify the noxious weeds in your pond, and begin the process of eliminating these pests from it. Coastal Plain Land and Lakes is licensed and insured to apply herbicides in an aquatic environment.
